If you’re anything like me, whenever you see a unicorn your heart skips a beat and  your heart fills with thoughts of rainbows and all thinks pink!  Let this Backyard Unicorn Party tutorial filled with mystical must-haves show you that unicorn dreams really do come true and they come in shades of pastel cotton candy and cupcakes.

Backyard Unicorn Party

To throw your own Backyard Unicorn Party, you’ll need to start with some inspiration!  My inspiration came from the limited edition Dr Pepper® “Pick your Pepper” packaging that features a unicorn on each can!

From there, everything to plan this backyard party was themed around the unicorn.  All the pink.  All the purple.  All the teal.  All the pretties! All the unicorns!

These limited edition Dr Pepper cans along with other designs can be found at your local Kroger store and from June 15 – August 15 (or while supplies last). June 21 – August 15, if you buy 3 Dr Pepper 12pk or 8pk 12oz (any variety), you get a FREE 20oz!

Make sure to scan the Snapchat code on your free 20oz bottle to receive an exclusive Pick Your Pepper Snapchat filter. Use this filter to take pictures at your party for added fun!

Defining the Space with Decorations

Since this is a Backyard Unicorn Party, I knew I wouldn’t need too many decorations to hang on walls, etc.  However,  I wanted to use some elements of the party to help define the space we were using.

Dessert Table

The dessert table is always a focal point at my parties.  I fill it with themed desserts and display them using texture,  themed colors, cake stands and coordinating plates.

For this unicorn party,  I used paper circle fans to add height to the space as well as using tassel garland to bring the table down.  Doing this is an easy way to add drama to the dessert table and entire party.

Main Table

The main table was so fun to set up!  Each place setting featured a plate for the meal and one for dessert as well as a napkin, candy suckers and a unicorn sugar cookie!  Of course, Dr Pepper Pick Your Pepper unicorn  cans were included with each setting.

The centerpiece of the table was a vase filled high with balloon wands and on each side of the wands were Dr Pepper Cream Pops.  Yum!

Seating Area

I always like to provide extra seating aside from the main table at a party.  To define this space, I hung a tissue tassel garland over two chairs positioned at an angle in the corner.  On the chairs sat a plush unicorn pillow and the party favor.

Dessert Table Details

One of my favorite details at a party are the sweet desserts featured on the dessert table.  For this party, all the desserts were unicorn and fairytale themed!

The cupcakes were super simple to make.  I used a vanilla box cake mix and baked the cupcakes in my favorite pink and white dot cupcake liners.  I topped the cupcakes with purple whipped vanilla buttercream and a mix of super cute sprinkles.

Simple to make and super cute!

Cereal Treats

Cereal treats are my go-to dessert at parties.  They are the simplest dessert to make because they are only 3 ingredients and take  only 5 minutes to put together.

For this unicorn party, I added a few drops of pink food gel coloring to the melted marshmallow before adding the cereal treats.  I then added a variety of themed sprinkles to the mix and more on top.  Perfect for this party!

Unicorn Bark

I’ve seen candy bark on tops of cakes and have always wanted to make it myself.  This unicorn party was the perfect excuse!  Follow these easy steps to make Unicorn Bark:

  1. Melt pink, purple, blue and white candy circles in separate bowls.
  2. Immediately drop colors of melted candy onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper until it’s covered.
  3. Pound the baking sheet flat on the counter to level out the colors.
  4. Use a knife  or spatula to swirl the colors together
  5. Finish off with a sprinkle mix!
  6. Allow to harden completely (3-4 hours)
  7. Using a sharp knife on a flat surface, press into the bark until it breaks organically.  Don’t force this process, the bark looks better when it breaks on its own.

To save myself some time, I also purchased a few items at the store to fill out the candy table.  My kids love salt water taffy and cotton candy, so that was what I picked for this party!

You could use any candy for this that matches your colors!

Dr Pepper Cream Pops

Of course, I had to make something delicious using Dr Pepper!  Being a backyard party, I created a simple, yet delicious cream pop flavored with Dr Pepper.  You can see the complete recipe for the Dr Pepper Cream Pops at the bottom of this post.

Unicorn Sugar Cookies

No party would be complete for me without sugar cookies frosted with buttercream!  I used my favorite recipe for the cookies and buttercream and found a unicorn cookie cutter at the craft store.

The supplies you’ll need are:

  • Disposable piping bags
  • Piping tip #3 (very small round) and #17 (small star) and #1 (tiny round)
  • Buttercream in white, pink, purple, and black
  • Edible gold dust & small paint brush (new)

Backyard Unicorn Party inspired by Dr Pepper | The JavaCupcake Blog

To decorate the cookies:

  1. Fill a piping bag fitted with the #3 small round tip with white frosting.
  2. Pipe the horn on the cookie first with the white.  Using the edible gold dust and the small brush, tap the dust onto the frosting horn until completely covered.  Tap off the excess.
  3. Still with the white, pipe a border around the entire cookie.  Using a back and forth motion, fill in the cookie with buttercream.
  4. Take a piping bag fitted with the #17 small star and fill it with half purple and half pink frosting.  (Press the first color against the side of the bag all the way to the bottom then repeat with the second color.  Squeeze the bag gently until both colors come out.)
  5. Pipe small stars/swirls where the unicorn mane would be.
  6. Fill a piping bag fitted with the #1 tiny round tip with black buttercream.  Pipe eyes and lashes onto each cookie.

Games & Party Favors

This unicorn party had to have party favors and games!  Seriously, it’d be no fun without them! Simple games and prizes are a must for my parties!

Pick Your Pepper Ball Toss

Super simple and fun game for any party is the ball toss!

Backyard Unicorn Party inspired by Dr Pepper | The JavaCupcake Blog

Simply stack up 10 cans of Dr Pepper and toss a ball at them.  First person to knock them all down on the first try, WINS!

Great thing about this game, no extra supplies needed!

Fairytale Wands

Since we couldn’t ride actual unicorns at this party, the next best thing is to use our magical fairytale wands to wish for them.

To make the wands you’ll need:

  • Long craft sticks
  • Curling ribbon
  • Confetti
  • 5″ balloons
  • Scissors

To assemble the wands you’ll need to:

  1. Fill each balloon with confetti.
  2. Blow the balloon up with air and tie it with a knot.
  3. Using the curing ribbon, tie the bottom of the balloon (under the knot) to the craft stick with a tight knot.
  4. Add extra ribbon and curl.

Unicorn Clutch

As a prize for the game or a party favor for one lucky guest at your party, provide them with a gift!  At my local craft store, I spotted this unicorn patch and coordinating clutch.  For just a few dollars, I DIY’d a themed gift for the party!

DIY Stipple Easter Eggs on a Tassel Garland |

DIY Stipple Easter Eggs

I’ve gone a little stipple crazy here lately.  I stippled coffee mugs last week and this week I’m making DIY Stipple Easter Eggs!

DIY Stipple Easter Eggs |

It only took me about 45 minutes to make these four eggs and the process was really simple!  You could easily give these as gifts to your guests at Easter Brunch, hang them from a tree in your yard, use them as place settings.  So may options!  I hung these in my office on my tassel garland.  I think they’re adorable!

I got a 6 pack of plastic eggs for €1 at the Nuremberg Easter Market, but I’m certain you can get them at any craft store in the US.  If you don’t have paint markets, use Sharpies.  If you don’t have a template, freehand it!  The great thing about these eggs is that they don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful!

Different colors, different patters… the possibilities are endless!

DIY Stipple Easter Eggs

  • Plastic eggs
  • Patterns or masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Washable glue stick
  • Paint markers in gold and black – size 1-2mm
  • Rubbing alcohol & q-tips/cotton balls
  • A sharp knife or blade
  • String or elastic

DIY Stipple Easter Eggs on a Tassel Garland |

  • Clean the egg off with a cotton ball wet with rubbing alcohol.  Allow to dry.
  • FOR THE EGGS with PATTERNS: Print the pattern and cut it out.
  • Apply the glue to the back of the pattern and place it on the egg where you like it.
  • Stipple around the pattern.  Apple more dots closer and denser near the pattern.
  • FOR THE EGGS with STRIPES:  Place masking tape around the entire egg.  Using your knife or blade, score the tape in strips and peel off the tape.
  • Stipple with the paint markers between the tape strips.  Make sure to stipple in a uniform manner making sure to fill in any blank spaces.
  • FOR ALL PATTERNS:  Allow the paint to dry before removing the pattern/tape.  About 2 minutes.
  • Once the pattern has been removed, use the knife to get an excess glue or paper off the egg.  Dip a q-tip in rubbing alcohol and clean off any excess glue or tape.  You can also rub off any unwanted paint… gently making sure not to smear what you do want.
  • Attach a piece of string or elastic to the hook and tie a knot to secure a loop.
  • I hung these eggs on a DIY tassel garland that I made for my office. But you could hang yours anywhere! The possibilities are endless!

Happy Easter!

Home Office Makeover |

Home Office Makeover

Moving every few years makes setting up a work space a home difficult. For the last 7 years, I have been working in a cramped, lifeless space. I know I could have used something like KeepSafe storage to clear some space, but it’s not because I wanted to work in a space like this, but because I really didn’t know how to create a space I loved. So, I decided to create a home office that was flexible in space, but beautiful, inspiring and ultimately a place I wanted to be!

Home Office Makeover |

Before I can tell you how I got to this great space… I should really show you where I started. My desk area was so sad. I have been working off of this tiny IKEA computer desk for at least a decade. It was usually more cluttered than this, but I snapped the picture below just before we tore the desk down to make space for the new office. One great way to save space on a desk is by getting an extra large mousepad so check out the top 10 extended mouse pads here.

There was no storage for photography equipment or props. There was no space to make anything pretty. I mean, it’s kinda difficult to make this old computer desk pretty. Yuck. I tried by freshening up a cork board by painting it and I made a few cute jars to put my pens in, but really I really just needed to start fresh.

Oh and did I mention that all of this is happening in my bedroom? So yah… my before desk was pinned into a corner next to the closet.

Home Office Makeover |

I began collecting ideas and pinning them on my Pinterest Home Office Board. As I looked at all the pictures as a whole… I noticed a trend. I like white, clean lines and teal/aqua as an accent color.

I also realized that I wanted a large work space. One that I could do DIY projects on, help my daughter with homework on and one that I could use during my photo sessions for the blog. I also knew I wanted lots of storage and shelving. I wanted my desk to sit in front of that storage/shelving and not be pressed up against the wall.

So with all these things in mind, my husband and I went to IKEA in Nuremberg with an open mine and a budget of €400.

My new Office Furniture also had to fit into the space in my bedroom that I created by removing everything but my bed, dresser and one shelf for the TV.

Home Office Makeover |

The desk I purchased was the MALM desk with pull-out panel and the ERIK three drawer unit with wheels. The pull out panel is my favorite. It allows me a space for the drawer unit right next to me, but out of the way and it pulls out whenever I need more space to work. I love having the drawers on wheels because I can easily move it creating a space my daughter and I can both sit at together to do homework!

The surface of this desk is huge. It allows me to lay out my computer, place for all my glass jars that hold my tools, note books, a pretty vase with flowers (also from IKEA) and even a photo of my family.

Home Office Makeover |

My notebooks are custom made from May Designs. I use them for EVERYTHING! The glass jars are a DIY project I did a few months ago. They are super simple to make. I just collected jam jars, cleaned them out, put a little tape around the middle then spray painted them gold. Once the paint was dry, I took the tap off, added a cute yarn tassel to one and now I’ve got cute jars for my desk to hold pens, scissors, etc! Super easy and super cute!

The wood tray I found at a local drug store for just a few Euro. It holds my chapstick and a few bobby pins. Keeps those things contained, accessible and out of the way.

Home Office Makeover |

Behind my desk is the KALLAX shelving unit, also from IKEA. I added two sets of drawers and two teal storage boxes to the unit to add space for storage. I like that I can display things in the empty space and store things in the drawers. Clean and cute with no clutter.

I had the small wood drawers already, so it made a perfect space for my printer under my bulletin board. The frame of the board has been painted gold and teal accent tassels in yarn added for a punch of color.

Home Office Makeover |

On top of the shelving I am not able to display my favorite baking books. Besides the Baking Bible, I am friends with all of the authors of these books. I like looking back and being inspired. Someday… maybe someday, I’ll write a book and add it to that pile.

The Monogram Sequein Letter “B” was made for me by my blogging bestie, Rachel of You can get one of your own in her shop HERE!

Home Office Makeover |

On the other side of my desk is my photography prop storage. Inside this KALLAX shelving unit with wheels, I have two additional storage boxes. Inside, I keep my two DSLR cameras and 4 lenses along with all the additional equipment I need for them.

On top of this storage unit, I have two mini pieces of art from CakeSpy and custom made mason jars from Just Add Glutter by Marla. I found the jars when browsing Instagram and contacted Marla to make me a custom set for my office! Aren’t they gorgeous?

During this makeover process, I also wanted to incorporate some art into my design. But, being on a limited budget, I knew I had to get creative.

Home Office Makeover |

So, I came up with several printables & other wall hangings that really brought character to my office. Like the Washington state silhouette above!

Home Office Makeover |

These three printables were the first ones I made and I’m in love. Rachel inspired me to hang them on these hangers, which were also DIY! I used wood pant hangers and spray painted them gold then hot glued a strip of gold sequins on an elastic band to the front, tied a teal yarn tassel to it and done! Perfect place to hang my printables!

You can find all these of these printables in my ETSY shop if you’d like them for your home or office too!

Home Office Makeover |

I had just enough sequins left to add a bit of flair to an old black picture frame. I think it perfectly matches the love-heart printable I made on top of this storage dresser.

And finally… probably one of my favorite parts of my entire office… the tissue paper tassel garland!

Home Office Makeover |

Again, Rachel was my inspiration for this! She has the cutest tassel hanging in her office and even supplied me with the grey and gold paper to make my own.

There are several tutorials online you can watch to see how to make them… but I’ve decided to make a tutorial of my own on how I made them and post that later! Stay tuned!

Home Office Makeover |

So basically… with a little inspiration, a vision and a relatively small budget… I was able to transform the extra space in my bedroom into a home office! I seriously spend most of my time here now and my family is not allowed in this space!

I love how the light from the windows hits the white furniture and brightens everything. The gold and teal accent colors make me happy every time I look at it!

Seriously… if I can create this space… so can you!
